Lincoln's Two Truths and a Lie

Lincoln is a unique place with a ton of quirks you won't find anywhere else.

When full, Memorial Stadium becomes Nebraska's third most populous city. And with the NCAA record of most consecutive sellouts (354), Memorial is always full.
The University has the biggest weight room in the U.S., stretching out for ¾ of an acre.
Nebraska is one of only five schools in college football history to win five national titles.

The truth is, Nebraska isn't one of the five schools to win five national football titles, it's one of the THREE schools to have done it.

Lincoln is home to the largest publicly held quilt collection in the world.
The University's Morrill Hall features the largest mammoth fossil showcased anywhere on the planet.
The only museum in the world focused solely on Lincoln Log structures is located in Lincoln.

The Lincoln Log museum doesn't exist (though we wish it did). Lincoln is home to some pretty interesting museums, though, like the Sheldon Museum of Art, the Great Plains Art Museum, the Frank H. Woods Telephone Pioneer Museum, the Museum of American Speed, and more.

The 911 emergency system originated in Lincoln, NE.
In the time of the Space Shuttle program, Lincoln was one of the designated emergency landing locations thanks to our "unusually and extremely long runway."
One of the President's Emergency Operations Centers (PEOC), built to withstand a nuclear hit, is located in Lancaster County.

The PEOC is actually in the East Wing of the White House, but Lincoln is home to an extensive bomb shelter built under government buildings during the Cold War. When it was built, it was one of the largest of its kind in the world.

There are over 75 restaurants within an eight-block radius of campus.
Honest Abe's Burgers and Freedom has been ranked as the best burger in Nebraska (and therefore, one of the best in the nation). Plus, it's only a couple blocks from campus.
Lincoln is known for its twist on Kansas City-style BBQ, called "Lincoln Sauce." Many of the local BBQ joints will have a special or two featuring the signature sauce.

There is no "Lincoln Sauce" (yet), but Lincoln does have Phat Jack's, an award-winning BBQ joint, as well as the annual Rib Fest that brings in BBQ lovers from all over.

USA Roller Sports, the governing body for competitive sports like speed skating, roller hockey and roller derby, is headquartered in Lincoln with the National Museum of Roller Skating.
Lincoln's roller derby team, the No Coast Derby Girls, are one of the most successful teams in the world, qualifying for post-season competition every year since 2009.
Cher's 1979 song "Hell on Wheels,"—featuring Cher on roller skates wearing a zebra-print jumpsuit—was one of the very first modern, MTV-style music videos and was filmed in Lincoln, NE.

Cher never filmed a music video here, but James Valentine, guitarist for Maroon 5, went to high school in Lincoln and his high school band wrote jingles for local restaurants like Amigos.

Academy Award-Winning Actress Hillary Swank was born in Lincoln in 1974.
Former vice-president Dick Cheney was born in Lincoln in 1941.
American business magnate and third richest man in the world, Warren Buffett, was born in Lincoln in 1930.

Warren Buffett was born down the highway in Omaha, but he did spend a good amount of time in Lincoln as a part of University of Nebraska–Lincoln's class of '51.

Lincoln, a cornerstone of the so-called "Silicon Prairie," is home to more than 100 software companies.
Lincoln sits at #4 on Forbes' list of Best Places to Work and has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country at only 2.5%.
Twitter co-founder Evan Williams, who was a University of Nebraska–Lincoln student, is looking at founding a new education-based startup in Lincoln called Lectr.

While Evan Williams was a Nebraska student, Lectr isn't a real company. There are many great startups with their international headquarters in Lincoln, like Hudl, and at any given time, as many as 2,400 internships are open to students.

The Arbor Day holiday got its start in Lincoln.

The first Arbor Day actually originated a few miles southeast in Nebraska City. These days, the Arbor Day Foundation is headquartered right here in Lincoln.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Lincoln has the record for the tallest structure built with Lincoln Logs.
Architecture Hall has the largest and oldest urinal West of the Mississippi. The only other place that has the same type of urinal—the Hindsdale—is a bar in Manhattan.
While completing a publicity tour through the United States, Usain Bolt—fastest man in the world—made a stop in Lincoln.

The world's fastest sprinter hasn't visited Lincoln yet, but one of the fastest ultrarunners in the world is a Lincoln native. Pete Kostelnick recently smashed the record for fastest run across the United States, finishing in 42 days, 8 hours, and 36 minutes.

Philip Johnson, founder of the Department of Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, was the architect for the Sheldon Museum of Art on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's City Campus.
The City of Lincoln's zoning laws prohibit downtown buildings in Lincoln from being taller than the State Capitol building.
At 400 ft. tall, the State Capitol building is the tallest capitol building in the United States.

Nebraska's State Capitol is the 2nd tallest capitol building in the U.S., just 50 feet shorter than Louisiana's State Capitol building.
